In spite of it’s dark origins (google “history of St Valentine’s Day” and you will see what I mean!) Valentines Day has been a sweet celebration of love since the the time of Shakespeare and Chaucer and in Middle Ages handmade paper tokens of love became “a thing”.
Eventually, the tradition made its way to the New World. The industrial revolution ushered in factory-made cards in the 19th century. And in 1913, Hallmark Cards of Kansas City, Mo., began mass producing valentines. February has not been the same since.
Today, the holiday is big business: According to market research firm IBIS World, Valentine’s Day sales reached $17.6 billion last year; this year’s sales are expected to total $18.6 billion.
Some, like me, believe that commercialization has spoiled the day for many. In the world of papercraft, I love to see us getting back to the hand-made/heartfelt side of expressing our love be it romantic or plutonic……I would even welcome a world where sending cards anonymously wasn’t considered creepy!
So how do you celebrate Valentine’s Day?
